In my other life as a comic book creator, I had the chance of sharing the stage for a panel on Superheroes and their spiritual/mystical footprint on the collective consciousness at NY Comic-Con this year with Douglas Rushkoff, one of the best Media Theorists and thinkers of today. In case you’re into such things here is the panel video (Google Video Link).
I mentioned to him about Dimdim in particular and web meetings in general and Doug had an interesting anecdote. He remembered that recently he had to attend a conference on environmental effects of Global Warming and strategies to counter it. The conference was held in the Caribbean and Douglas mentioned that it was ironic that each of the attendees had spent a significant amount of jet fuel trying to get to the conference in the first place.
We both laughed at the joke. But somewhere down the line this got me thinking. I recently became a father and though my wife and I have always been very conscious of our carbon footprint, the thought of my daughter inheriting a world ravaged by Global Warming is kind of a nightmare situation for both of us. Scaling that scenario up from individuals to corporations, imagine the carbon footprint of a large corporation which has people traveling all around the world to coordinate distributed teams. That can be reduced significantly via use of web meeting software like Dimdim.
We are lucky enough to live in a world where technology allows us to have a remote presence at sites on a scale which was not possible say 10 years ago. Why not use it? Technology is not cool because of buzzwords/bizwords, but because of the simple fact that it can and does make life easier. I’m proud to have been a part of something like Dimdim which has a real potential in making the world a better place.
We inherited the world from our Fathers and Mothers. We have a duty to make sure that the ones that come after us have a chance. So be green, and the next time you plan on making a business trip halfway across the world, use web conferencing instead.
Some Dimdim Green Stats:
- A typical 30 minute virtual Dimdim web meeting with 5 people can eliminate 1.3 metric tons of CO2 and save $810 in travel expenses.
- A Dimdim Free 20 person meeting can save over $3K for each meeting
- In 2008, Dimdim Web Meeting users have saved over $61M in travel expenses and saved over 100,000 metric tons of CO2 from being released into the atmosphere.
So breathe freely while you meet freely.
Save some green. Save the world.

We've had lots of traffic since we announced our $6M funding and so I'm testing a way to use Yahoo Pipes to showcase all the news. Enjoy!
